“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves.”
(Paul's letter to Romans, Chapter 1, verse 24.)
The letter to Romans is a fitting introduction to a discussion of the subject of homosexuality. It contains some pertinent observations regarding this practice, in the ancient world.
I was raised in an old-fashioned environment, in which such subjects were never mentioned. Indeed, it was only at the ripe old age of 18 years that I became aware of the full extent of the implications of homosexual behaviour. Hitherto, a "Cissy" was merely a man lacking the male attributes of character. Being distinctly heterosexual in my own personal tastes, I was, naturally, horrified at the implications of the suggestion, that persons of the same sex could possibly be sexually attracted to each other. In the intervening years, the problem of Homosexuality has grown in magnitude, until it threatens to become a monster that will swamp the moral life of the world community.
During a lifetime of working with people, I have met many homosexual people. Indeed, as a young man who spent much time in his own company, I found that I was a prime target for those who prey upon the young. This gave me a peculiar insight into the activities of pederasts. In dealing with this question, one has to look at the nature of Homosexuality. It will readily be evident that there are distinct types of homosexual personality. These might be categorized as follows:
1 The genetically sexually indeterminate. (Chromosome abnormality).
2 The emotionally homosexual. Those naturally effeminate (or female masculinity).
3 The essentially heterosexual person, who chooses to engage in homosexual behaviour: "Bi-sexuals".
4 Pederasts or Paedophiles: sexual perverts who prey upon children.
It will be apparent that those persons coming within the first category may be regarded as unfortunate individuals. Those who suffer from a distinctly biological condition are deserving of public compassion. One can throw no stones at these people: nor does it appear that much can be done, medically speaking, to alleviate the condition. It is a problem for geneticists and psychologists. The same remarks apply to the second category, to a lesser extent. One often meets homosexuals of this type. They are generally friendly, extroverted people, who have no difficulty in relating socially to heterosexual folk. Apart from occasioning embarrassment, their activities are generally harmless: except to the extent to which they are involved in the spread of disease. Often of an artistic temperament, they can be highly sensitive and critical of others.
The third category of person would appear to invoke very different moral considerations. These are people, ostensibly heterosexual in their physical make-up and biological sexuality, who for purely social reasons, seek to engage in homosexual activity, from time to time. This category includes those who consider themselves to be "Bi-sexual": who see no harm in the practice of Sodomy. These people marry and lead normal heterosexual lives, until circumstances arise which induce them to experiment in homosexual activity. For instance: military service overseas and away from the company of females, may induce males to develop sexually emotional relationships with one another. I was witness to developments of the latter nature, during a spell of overseas military service, as a young man. Such activities were abhorrent to most lads, yet were openly conducted by one or two young men. These included "petting" and cuddling in quarters, in the presence of other fellows. Whilst this behaviour seemed relatively harmless at the time, there is no doubt that it could well have developed into a more serious type of misbehaviour.
The "Bi-sexual" man constitutes a threat to Society. It is he who undermines the social structure. It is he who is often responsible for the spread of disease and particularly HIV-Aids. In the prisons, the sodomising of young, hitherto innocent, heterosexual males, is a serious problem: one which seems to be beyond the capacity of prison authorities to control.
I recall being concerned, many years ago, with a criminal who had been charged with sodomising a young man in a lane at the rear of an hotel, in company with several other men. This was a case of "homosexual pack-rape". Rape, indeed, is an horrific invasion of any person's physical integrity, whether the victim be male or female. I do not denigrate the gravity of the consequences of the rape of a woman. Rape, in any language, is a gross and intolerable outrage upon a helpless victim. However, such an attack upon a young man by other males, is shameful in the extreme. It reveals a degree of moral depravity which is hardly conceivable. One can envisage the sense of shame and degradation that the victim would experience and which would remain with him for the rest of his days. The sense of personal contamination! That this is a laughing-matter to the perpetrators of the foul deed, goes without saying. Yet, activity of this nature is happening every day and within the prison system, in which Society would imagine that the authorities are in control. The official attitude, however, is one of hand-wringing impotence. The message for all young men being: "Don't end up in prison!" But enough of this sordid business!
Then let us proceed to the question of Pederasty! Here we are entering an even more pernicious environment. Look around! We observe a world which is gradually becoming aware that, on every hand, there are sexual perverts who prey upon little children, male or female; it matters not to them, although many prefer small boys. These people are often in authority: Boy Scout leaders, Teachers, Clergymen, Local Politicians, Welfare Workers. They are often persons influential in the community: very respectable people.
There is a world-wide trade in the provision of facilities for those exhibiting sexual aberrations. In Thailand or the Phillipines, (and probably in many other countries) little boys and girls are available, with whom these gentlemen may indulge their strange sexual lusts. It goes without saying that the children themselves have no say in the matter. How much imagination does one need to envisage the horrors thus inflicted upon the innocent? Did not some wise man once affirm that, "...Inasmuch as ye have done unto one of these my little ones, ye have done it even unto me?"
There has recently been a stir in Australia regarding the problem of paedophilia. It is a belated recognition of the plain fact that for over a hundred years, children in Orphan Homes and similar institutions have been exposed to sexual maltreatment at the hands of sexual perverts in authority. These have included clergymen: people holding a sacred duty to preserve the little ones committed to their charge. What a litany of hypocritical horrors is this? How foul the experiences to which these children were exposed! Yet the church has consistently white-washed the difficulty: made excuses for human weakness. So much for the approach of the Christian Church to the problem.
Now, concerted efforts are being made to bring some of these criminals to justice. Some have evaded human justice: have killed themselves or died, violently or otherwise. However, they can never escape the consequences of their own evil deeds, which will follow them through this world and into the next, where they will be made painfully obvious to them. (That is my belief: the personal responsibility for all human activity).
There has been some argument recently, regarding the "Age of Consent" for homosexual activity. This question is directly related to the question of Pederasty. Where does one draw the line between the moral and physical degradation of a child or a young person? If homosexual conduct is essentially immoral, as I believe it to be, then if one has to have an arbitrary cut-off point, it should be at an age at which young people are sufficiently mature to make a decision. This cannot be younger than 18 years, and would preferably be, say 21 years. Certainly, a 16 year old male or female, is insufficiently mature to make decisions of so grave a nature. The hidden, concealed and underhand nature of the "evil" makes it incumbent upon legislatures to carefully consider the alternatives.
So much then for the Pederasts. What about the spread of Aids? What can be done about that?
The HIV-Aids virus, evidently, originated in Africa, where it is a serious problem for both heterosexual and homosexual alike. However, during the last thirty years or so, it has been spread throughout the whole World, until the problem becomes acute.
But what do we observe? There has been great agitation for many years by an increasingly vocal homosexual lobby, calling itself "Gay". (However this has to be a misnomer and a clear abuse of a beautiful Anglo-Saxon word.) They are anything but gay. However, they are certainly vocal. The result of the pressure from homosexuals has been, that countless millions of dollars have been expended annually, all over the globe, in endeavouring to discover a cure: to create a vaccine which will eradicate the problem once and for all. Upon the production of this miraculous cure, all will be well. Until then, homosexual activity continues, with the increasing spread of the contagion. It is a case of the man setting fire to the house, then complaining at the delay in the arrival of the fire brigade.
Whilst a number of infected female prostitutes may be helping to spread the disease, it is a well-established fact that Aids is spread, substantially, in Western Societies, by promiscuous homosexual intercourse. Has anything been done to limit or control such behaviour? By no means! One must not comment upon the moral perversity of such behaviour. Society must not interfere with the lawful right of these people to engage in their obnoxious, disease-spreading activities. However, it has a weighty obligation to do all in its power to find a cure for this disease, which is a continuous threat to all mankind.
Some wise person once described homosexual people as, "The dead twigs on the tree of life". Let me say, once and for all, that I have no personal animosity towards anyone, on account of his or her sexual preferences. But all thinking people have the right and the obligation to speak out, when they observe society going down the wrong track. This is what is happening in our world today.
Here in Australia, we have an annual event, called "The Gay Mardi-Gras", which for revolting and obscene behaviour, could hardly be equalled by any display on Earth. The parade is made a vehicle for the ridicule and abuse of all traditional moral values. Those who speak out against homosexuality are grotesquely caricatured: their honestly expressed views derided with exaggerated and scornful contempt. This parade attracts homosexuals and deviates from all over the world and, no doubt, contributes to the spread of HIV-Aids in this country, (Australia) in proportion to the number of active homosexuals who engage in sexual activity whilst they are here. This parade is welcomed by the Sydney business fraternity, as it injects some millions of US Dollars into the New South Wales economy, each year. The fact that it also attracts thousands of Sydneysiders who view the parade, with pleasure, as a form of decadent but titillating entertainment, says nothing for the intelligence or morals of the onlookers. The suppression or, at least, control of this monstrous performance would perhaps benefit the international image of the City of Sydney, which at present is that of a repository of vice and moral destitution.
In considering the problem of Aids, consideration has to be given to those sufferers who have been infected accidentally, through no fault or culpability of their own, for instance, via blood-transfusions. These people receive little recognition or compassion. Society has an obligation to search for a vaccine, if only to promote the well-being of these innocent victims.
---------------
Conclusion: What then, is to be done about the problem of Homosexuality and Aids?
Governments must discourage all forms of sexual activity that are likely to result in the spread of the contagion. In the absence of a cure, there will, sooner or later, have to be some control over the extent of homosexual practices. Amongst the alternatives are :
1 Greater discipline and segregation in Prisons.
2 Compulsory Aids testing before international travel.
3 Segregation of sexually active HIV-Aids patients. Use of mental hospitals (now empty) as hospitals for these patients.
4 Public education as to the manner in which HIV-Aids is spread and as to the dangers of homosexual conduct.
5 Compulsory registration of carriers.
6 A Public denial of the “normality” of homosexual conduct and a public rejection of the suggestion that homosexual relationships are proper or acceptable to Society as a whole. There can be no such status as that of homosexual or lesbian "marriage", which is an affront to Society. Nor should consideration be given, under any circumstances, to the adoption of children by persons living in such relationships.
-------------
That HIV-Aids is substantially spread by the promiscuous activities of Homosexuals and Prostitutes, in Western Communities, has to be clearly acknowledged by Society. Any other response to the problem of Aids in this or any other community will fail to halt the spread of this alarming disease. Man alone is responsible for the evils that he brings upon himself. It is no good crying out, "Why does God allow this to happen!?" If we, as a Society, are content to tolerate evil, whenever we observe it, or if we neglect to do all in our power to eradicate it, then we must accept the consequences.
Paedophilia, homosexuality, sexual-perversion and HIV-Aids, are but reflections of the extent of the decay of moral and spiritual values in our World. They are inextricably interwoven and cannot be categorized as, either, acceptable, partly-acceptable or unacceptable. Herein lies the dilemma! Society, sooner or later, will have to face the facts. It will not be able to ignore the problem: pretending, as in the past, that it does not exist. Sexual perversion is an evil, which demands control and supervision by Society of all its aspects. We have an overriding obligation to protect our children from the menace in our midst. We have made a mess of things in the Twentieth-Century. Hopefully, those who come after us in the Twenty-first Century will be a little wiser than we.
"Be not deceived; God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Paul's letter to Galatians, Chapter 6, verse 7.
These wise words are, surely, worthy of consideration.
Postscript:
On the question of Sex-Change.
One is born into the world, usually with a distinctly obvious sexual attribute. One is either male or female. There are, of course, those genetic mutations, which arise from time to time, resulting in the production of sexless human-beings. Some unfortunates have both the physical attributes of the male and the female or a variant of both: (Hermaphrodites).
One, naturally, views such people with compassion and sympathy. However, there is an increasing number of persons, of both sexes who, dissatisfied with their physical sexual orientation, seek to have this changed via surgical means. There are even members of the medical profession who consider it to be quite ethical (as well as highly profitable), to undertake surgical operations, in order to gratify the whims of these unhappy people. By a combination of surgery and the use of hormone-therapy, a man may be transformed into a woman, or vice-versa. Indeed, this is a miraculous situation! Can the new female then proceed to give birth to a child, as a normal woman or can the new male fertilize a woman via normal sexual intercourse. By no means! The transformation is not complete. The individual remains what he was at birth, in spite of the disappearance of certain physical external organs.
The "new" female is now able to dress in feminine attire and sport "herself" as a young-lady about town. An unfortunate fact is that, quite often, certain male features: heavy muscular build and coarse skin remain, to remind "her" of her past life. Another male may be attracted to this "lady" but inevitably discovers the true situation. Feeling outraged and embarrassed, he terminates the relationship.
In fact, the behaviour of transvestites and those who have undergone sex-change operations may be considered embarrassing and offensive. They are seen as, an affront to the masculinity of the male and are certainly an outrageous imposition on female members of the community. Some might snigger and treat the matter lightly, but for an unsuspecting person to be duped by one of these people is no laughing-matter for them.
From a social point of view, therefore, sex-change operations are unacceptable. They achieve absolutely nothing, apart from the cosmetic effects achieved by surgery and breast-enhancing hormones.
All the wishful thinking, of which mankind is capable, will not turn a man into a woman, or the reverse. It is just not possible. Why then, does society tolerate such an affront to common decency as a “sex-changed” male or female? It is high time that the ethics of the medical profession were altered, to exclude such futile and useless surgical operations. Surgeons have an obligation to use their skills for the benefit of the sick, not to gratify the whims of the confused, fanciful and vain.
There can be no question of Society entertaining the proposition that a person has changed his or her sex. There can be no proper legal recognition of such a change in status. It would be a fraud upon mankind for such a thing to occur. One trusts that legislative bodies will not be fooled by propositions of that nature. Let the changelings enjoy their delusions, so long as they do not seek to inflict them upon a long-suffering Public.
Footnote: The discovery of the “triple-whammy” drug treatment seems to have alleviated the major effects of infection with HIV-AIDS, but has also removed the incentive towards good-behaviour on the part of many people, who were hitherto at risk of an early demise from this disease. Unhappily, it does nothing for the people of Africa and other Third-World countries, who cannot afford the high cost of medication demanded by Drug Companies. It is to be hoped that recent initiatives by International Charitable Agencies will help to reduce the mortality rate from this disease amongst the children of these countries. HIV-AIDS is not, of course, the only serious and fatal disease afflicting the people of Africa and the Third-World, generally, and which demand urgent, massive and sustained funding, if enormous human suffering is to be reduced or prevented.
