ALL THE WAY – TO HELL WITH GEORGE W. BUSH.
By
John Roberts (2002)
What! More complaints about America!?
Well, I must admit that this short essay will not have very much to say about the United States, that could be considered to be of a complimentary nature. However, my remarks, at the moment, are mainly to be confined to observations on the calibre of those characters who presently man the halls of power in Canberra, ACT, the Capital City of that place called “Australia”. (For those who have never heard of Australia, I must affirm that it is a large desert island in the South Pacific, Eastwards of the Indian Ocean).
Now Australia has a Conservative Government, which is comprised of members of a political party, calling itself the “Liberal” Party. This is a misnomer, as its members are anything but “Liberal” in the proper sense of that term. They are first and foremost, “Capitalists”, whose only real policy during the years they have been in office, has been to sell-off, as quickly as possible, all Public Assets, to their wealthy associates. We are now rapidly reaching the stage at which there is nothing else to flog-off, apart from the remaining half of Telecom Australia (Now Telstra). There is also a Government-run Private Hospital Fund, which is ripe for the picking.
It is only fair to add that the Liberal Party is not the only political party to participate in the looting of Public Property: the “Labor” Party, once a bastion of Socialist idealism, has been infiltrated by reactionary elements over a period of many years and is now virtually indistinguishable from the Conservative Political body. Labor Party leaders, where they hold political power, are actively engaged in the surreptitious “privatisation” of remaining public assets.
Here in the State of New South Wales, the Premier, Bob Carr, a Labor leader, is quietly “privatising” Public Utilities as fast as he can, without, evidently, upsetting the last remaining Socialist members of the Party. Our State Bank and Government Insurance Office, two really efficient organizations, were sold off some years ago by Conservative State Governments, since when the people of New South Wales have been deprived of security in Banking and Insurance transactions. “Opportunism” is the major political philosophy in Australia today.
Hence, it comes as no surprise to note that the leaders of the various political parties in Australia have no sound moral consciousness. At the commencement of the Vietnam War, our then Conservative Prime Minister, one Harold Holt, was heard to declare that Australia would go, “All the way with LBJ”. (Lyndon B. Johnson being then President of the United States. Johnson became President following the assassination of John F.Kennedy, who had unwisely entered into commitments with unseemly business associates, which he was unable or unwilling to fulfil.) This slavish and unthinking support of the USA is still the attitude of those with political clout in Canberra. Mr. John Winston Howard, the present PM, has recently visited George W. Bush in Washington, DC, (2002) where Mr. Bush patted Mr. Howard on the back and referred to him as a “Good Fellow!”. It seems that John Howard has promised George W. Bush the moral and military support of Australia in any attack upon Iraq.
It is historical fact that the Vietnam War was a disaster for all concerned and particularly so for the Vietnamese people themselves. Their country was destroyed, the forests defoliated with Agent Orange, a deadly poison, flora and fauna wiped out, cities flattened by the ruthless carpet bombing, which systematically destroyed everything above ground in North Vietnam. Millions of its people, men, women and children, including tiny babes, were killed or maimed. The effects of Napalm bombing were well-documented, in the intensive Television coverage given to this campaign. In addition, it seems that biological weapons may have been used in that conflict. They were certainly used against Chinese and North Korean troops during the Korean War. It is common knowledge that Johnson seriously considered using “Nukes” against the North. This fact has been mentioned by me in a previous essay but will bear repetition, again and again. It is also known that Richard Nixon (when President) gave orders to “Nuke” Vietnam, which were wisely ignored by his advisers.
John Howard has repeatedly affirmed his support for the action proposed to be taken by Mr. Bush against the conceived enemies of the United States: Mr. Howard appearing to consider that the foes of that powerful nation are also the enemies of Australia. He is supported in this contention by the unanimous vote of his colleagues, including Australia’s rather sluggish and delicate Foreign Minister, Mr. A. Downer. The latter is convinced that there can be no appeasement of people like Saddam Hussein, the leader of the Iraqi Government. Mr Bush, like his famous European counterpart, Adolf Hitler, is rapidly running out of patience with Mr. Hussein.
George Bush’s anger against Iraq and particularly against Saddam Hussein, has been sharpened of late by the reminder of the disaster of the 11 Sep 2001, when some three-thousand souls were killed by terrorist attacks upon the USA. The thirst for vengeance has not been thoroughly slaked by the butchery carried out in Afghanistan against the largely innocent population of that country. Nobody knows how many thousands were slaughtered by the United States military machine but one suspects that it was a substantial body of men, women and children. However, George W. Bush wants more blood. His ire against Iraq is based on the proposition that Saddam Hussein is attempting to produce weapons of mass destruction, with which to threaten or attack his enemies in the region of the Middle-East. Israel comes to mind as a major foe of Iraq and may well constitute a factor in the reasoning of United States officials. Another important factor is the US belief that Saddam is very pally with Public Enemy No. 1, Mr. Bin Laden.
One might ask, who introduced the technology for the production of poison gas and biological weapons into Iraq? Was it not the United States? Certainly, it is known that the CIA assisted Iraq in the use of these horrific agents of destruction in its war with Iran. (Then the current “whipping boy” of the United States administration). It is certainly a fact that the USA is a principle producer of such weapons of destruction and has carried out extensive research in biological weapons, poison gas, etc.. It is also common knowledge that this country has the world’s largest stocks of such diabolical materials, including enormous numbers of nuclear weapons.
No doubt, Saddam Hussein is not a very nice person to know and has dealt harshly with his political opponents: has killed people without cause and imprisoned dissidents. His treatment of Kurds and Marsh Arabs has been described as "inhumane". However, these are purely internal matters, which will ultimately need to be resolved by the Iraqi people themselves, as that nation evolves as a member of the family of nations.
What is clear at the present time is that the grandstanding and posturing of George W Bush against Iraq is a menace to world peace and demands that all decent peace-loving people raise their voices in protest at the abrogation by the USA of all principles of international law and justice. That this aggressive preparation for war against a helpless Middle-Eastern nation is supported at the present time by Great Britain and Australia is to be utterly deprecated. Have the leaders of these two privileged nations abandoned all sense of decency and fair-play?
Naturally, the people of Iraq will defend themselves as best they can, if attacked by the United States and its co-conspirators. It will be futile, of course, as the heroic warriors of the aggressors will ensure that they will run little risk to life and limb, whilst their military technology will repeat the one-sided butchery of the Gulf War. It will, once again, be a cynical exercise in the slaughter of helpless people. In the meantime, the bombing of Iraq by the combined Air Forces of the United States and Britain continues, on the specious ground that Iraq is breaching a United Nations requirement to keep its own aircraft out of a specific air-corridor. This bombing has continued for years, without protest from other members of the United Nations Assembly. Is it, therefore, surprising to note that Iraq is seeking ways in which to defend itself?
But all this has been foreseen by the US administration. G.W. Bush has won the approval of the members of Congress for his proposed attack upon Iraq, with or without the approval of the United Nations Assembly. This, one prays fervently, will never be forthcoming and will, inevitably, be vetoed by Russia or France. Russia, having just done a massive trade deal with Iraq will not wish to see its business go up in smoke. The USA will, in its present mood, go it alone against Iraq. Nobody doubts its determination and ability to bring about such an assault.
Not only will thousands of innocents suffer and women and children die, to add to the already appalling carnage, but irreparable damage will be caused to the relations between Islam and the USA. The latter nation will increasingly be perceived to be driven by evil men, capable of aggression and intimidation against any other nation on this globe. They have the capacity to destroy the world. In addition, they will lose the support of many of those countries which presently accept the role of the USA as world leader, both economically and militarily.
To this writer, it appears that the USA, like Australia and Great Britain, is governed and controlled by small-minded politicians, who find themselves thrust into positions of power. Lacking in intelligence, sensitivity and compassion, their primary motivation is that of self-interest. They are circumspect and parochial in outlook and incapable of perceiving their place in the world as members of one great community of humankind. Such is certainly the case at the present time Our leaders are products of a materialistic and thoroughly selfish age, in which opportunism, greed and lust for power predominate.
Those victims of violence who have passed over into the Spirit World, from whatever cause, and they are legion, must surely join their prayers to all those men and women of good-will who desire the see the family of mankind progress, rather than to see it slide into inevitable anarchy and chaos.
To suggest that the United Nations should inspect and monitor all “Weapons of Mass Destruction”, is an excellent proposition. However, such supervision should commence with those nations primarily engaged in the production and distribution of such monstrous instruments of mass murder. It should start with the United States itself, followed closely by Russia. These two nations are the culprits in this sad tale of wickedness. Saddam Hussein is a small-time player, who is being forced into the position of attempting to defend his country against irresponsible aggression from a hugely powerful foe.
Mr and Mrs. Average American : the time is ripe for you to bestir yourselves and realise just what sort of a monster you have created. Sept l1 was merely the consequence of fifty years of covert and overt aggression against the people of the Third World, during which countless thousands have perished. You are not going to see the removal of the threat to your internal security and the happiness of your people until you clean up your own front doorstep. In the words of your own “Declaration of Independence”: … “We hold these truths to be self-evident : l That all men are created equal….. “. What a great ideal and how have you consistently dishonoured it.
Need one say more?
